The type of pigging used by the pipeline industry depends on the beneficial end results desired. To select a proper pig configuration, the operator must know the following things;

♦ Wall thickness(es)
♦ Minimum bend Radius (radius and degree of bend)
♦ Pipeline Length
♦ Product Media (gas, oil, etc.)
♦ Flow rate / Velocity
♦ Side connections (Tees barred / unbarred / Y-Piece)
♦ Valve type and internal cavity (Valves should be full bore / full opening)
♦ Pigging history
♦ Abnormalities (dual diameter/H2S /mitre-bends/high flow/high temp/wax/black dust)

Greater challenge arise when these pipelines comes with internal surface coating of cement or polyethylene liner. Beyond that, some pipelines inherit complex conditions that makes it quite impossible to pig (e.g. multi-diameter, stuck pig issue, sludge deposit, Wye-Piece and etc.). The challenge with these type of pipeline is to clean the pipeline to the required standard e.g. for internal In-Line Inspection (ILI) for metal loss detection, without causing any damage to the pipeline.
