An Overview of In-Line Inspection (ILI) Services
In-line Inspection (ILI) is a technique of assessment on pipelines using specialized pigs, integrated with sensors and microcomputer technologies. It is also referred as “Intelligent pigs” which comes in both tethered and non-tethered capability to detect and accurately size internal and external defects (anomalies) of pipeline. ILI with its smart sensing technologies, detects, measures and records irregularities in pipelines including corrosion, cracks, deformations, or other anomalies.
ILI is a common approach of inspection that utilizes non-destructive examination techniques and widely used in the oil and gas industry. ILI Inspection techniques complies to international standards and has proven track records to examine all type of pipelines, even with extreme conditions. ILI introduced back in 1960s and used to be a costly and time consuming inspection techniques. However, today with modern technology and evolved techniques, ILI is a common approach of inspecting pipeline and extensively used world-wide to detect all types of anomalies through smarter, simplistic and economical approach.
There are several types of intelligent pigs in ILI industry, whereby each comes with its own distinctive set of advantages and disadvantages. Some are more effective at detecting certain types of corrosion or damage and some come with crack detection capabilities, depending on their capabilities and customer requirements. Thereby, to overcome the gaps, different technologies were combined as COMBO tool to compensate each other and widen the capability of detection to detect different types of anomalies – making it more efficient and effective. Recent development, some ILI manufacturers are coming up with robotic or tethered capability combining with Cloud Computing and IIOT sensing technology to detect and record the data at much effective way.
